Former WWE superstar Zack Ryder, real name Matt Cardona, was among those released by the company earlier this year amid the cost-cutting measures implemented in response to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. According to Cardona, however, that didn't stop the promotion from asking to use his personal swimming pool for an on air-segment after the fact.

Cardona recently made an appearance on The Major Wrestling Figure Podcast, which is hosted by his longtime tag team partner Brian Myers (formerly known as Curt Hawkins). Cardona explained that after he was released by WWE, the company tried to get in contact with him through his fiancĂ©e, fellow professional wrestler and current NXT superstar Chelsea Green, asking to use his pool for a segment on SmackDown featuring Otis and Mandy Rose. Cardona was less than pleased.

"I'm sitting by the pool with Chelsea, and she has a weird look on her face," the former Zack Ryder recalled. "She's checking her phone, and I'm like, 'Babe, what's up?' She's like, 'Uh, someone from WWE asked me if Otis, Mandy Rose and a camera crew can come here to film a pool scene for SmackDown.' I was shaking in anger. Shaking in anger. You fired me, but you want to use my pool?"

Cardona continued, "I had a tweet sent, and I say this sometimes, 'Don't press send.' It was a 'don't press send' tweet. I was just very, like, 'You fired me, but you want to use my pool a couple weeks later?' ... I was pissed. The fact is they didn't even ask me, they asked her!"

Interestingly enough, Otis did actually end up going over to Cardona's house, having been invited by fellow WWE workers John Morrison and The Miz -- two real-life friends of Cardona's who were unaware of WWE's request. "I guess they were taping at the Performance Center on Monday and Tuesday, and my good friends, Morrison and The Miz, they said they were coming over," Cardona said. "They [were] texting me and said -- 'Can I bring Otis?' So, I thought it was a rib because they knew the story. That pissed me off, too, but then sure enough, Otis shows up! It wasn't a rib. Listen, I don't know Otis -- I know who he is, obviously, I wrestled him, believe it or not. Dude, this guy is pure entertainment gold. I fell in love with this man."

Cardona signed a developmental deal with WWE back in 2005, with he and Myers being called up to the main roster in 2007, joining the La Familia stable as Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins alongside Edge, Vickie Guerrero, Chavo Guerrero and Bam Neely. Ryder saw a major surge in popularity around 2011 thanks to the success of his own YouTube series Z! True Long Island Story. While WWE has often been criticized for the way it booked Ryder over the years, the Long Island Iced Z has managed to rack up some noteworthy accolades, holding the WWE Tag Team Championships with Curt Hawkins, as well as the United States Championship and the Intercontinental Championship (in addition to being the self-proclaimed Internet Champion).
