WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Dr. Strange #1 by Mark Waid and Kev Walker, on sale now

Doctor Strange ranks as one of the most powerful and capable of the Marvel Universe's heroes. He's the Sorcerer Supreme, capable of fighting old gods and defeating unimaginable monsters. But that doesn't make him invincible, as his humbling defeats have shown. However, his latest drubbing comes from a very surprising source.

The Wrecker, nominally a member of the C-list villain squad known as the Wrecking Crew, just gained a huge power boost -- and used it to beat Doctor Strange almost to death.

The Wrecking Crew were first introduced by Len Wein and Sal Buscema in the pages of The Defenders, after the first appearance of the Wrecker himself in the pages of Thor by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby almost a decade earlier. The Wrecker is Dirk Garthwaite, a convict who made his living destroying crime scenes to cover for other criminals.

However, after he knocked out a powerless Loki, he was confused for the God of Mischief himself by the Queen of the Nords. She empowered Dirk and transformed his crowbar into an enchanted weapon. The Wrecker battled Thor multiple times, before ending up in prison. There, he was able to spread the power of his crowbar to three other men who would become his future partners -- Bulldozer, Piledriver and Thunderball.

Together, the group has battled with many of the heroes of the Marvel Universe. However, that also means they've been beaten by most of the heroes of the Marvel Universe. They've become go-to henchmen for the supervillain community, participating in the original Secret Wars and at various times serving under the orders of Jigsaw, the Hood and the Masters of Evil. As a result of all that, they've never stood on their own as major solo villains, and the whole team has been defeated by a number of solo heroes. But Wrecker may have just changed that once and for all.

Upon seeing the fallout from the chaos at the hospital he's resumed his work at, Doctor Strange decides to investigate. A block of apartment buildings has been attacked and demolished, leaving many dead or injured. Making things worse, the Eye of Agamotto shows Doctor Strange that many of the dead were killed in twisted, magical ways.

Before he can investigate further, the hero's attacked by the Wrecker. But when Doctor Strange tries to use his magical abilities to contain the villain's enchanted crowbar, the Wrecker is able to throw off the spell with ease. It turns out Wrecker has been given a new crowbar from a mysterious source.

It's unknown just how powerful this new crowbar really is, but it's quickly shown to be a very dangerous weapon. The crowbar is impervious to enchantments from Doctor Strange, apparently only obeying the whims of the Wrecker. It seems to create a black creature, which reaches out and binds Doctor Strange. It's even strong enough to overcome any mystical defenses Strange created for himself, enabling the Wrecker to easily break Doctor Strange's shoulder with a single well-placed blow.

All of this lets the Wrecker do what he does best: wreck things. Using his bare hands, he beats the weakened Doctor Strange into submission, ties him up in metal and throws him off the side of a bridge into the river below.

Just like that, the Wrecker goes from just another member of a team of C-list villains to the guy who manhandled the Sorcerer Supreme with ease. He may even decide to use this power to settle the score with other heroes across the Marvel Universe. However, the one who empowered him in the first place is likely an even bigger threat. Even if Doctor Strange is able to stop the Wrecker, there may be a grander mystery at play than he realizes.
