In "When We First Met," we spotlight the various characters, phrases, objects or events that eventually became notable parts of comic lore, like the first time someone said, "Avengers Assemble!" or the first appearance of Batman's giant penny or the first appearance of Alfred Pennyworth or the first time Spider-Man's face was shown half-Spidey/half-Peter. Stuff like that.

Reader Jesse F. wrote to me recently to ask, "I don't know if you've already covered this, but I wonder if J. Jonah Jameson has ever actually said "get me pictures of Spider-Man!" or if it's a "beam me up, Scotty!" never-quite-said-it phrase."

Obviously, there's a whole meme related to Jameson's obsession with getting pictures of Spider-Man.

Most of that revolved around J.K. Simmons' brilliant performance as J. Jonah Jameson in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, but do note that interestingly enough, it does not appear as though Simmons ever says "Get me pictures of Spider-Man!" The closest he comes is "Get me Spider-Man!" which certainly implies that he means pictures, but I dunno, dude has funded a number of attempts to literally capture Spider-Man, so who knows what he meant exactly.

I could have missed it, but I don't believe Jameson ever said it in the films, no.

In the comics, though, it came about pretty darn quickly.

In Amazing Spider-Man #2 (by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee), Jameson first notes that he wants someone to get him photos of the Vulture...

Later, when Peter Parker succeeds in getting those photos of the Vulture, Jameson also tells him that he'd like to see if Peter could also get photographs of Spider-Man...

You could easily argue that this, right here, is the first time that Jameson asked Peter to get him pictures of Spider-Man, but I think it is fair to note that when we think of Jameson asking for pictures of Spider-Man, it sort of implies that he is YELLING it, right? Not, "Get me some pictures of Spider-Man," but rather, "Get me pictures of Spider-Man!"

And for that, we would have to wait until Amazing Spider-Man #4, where the more common dynamic between Jameson and Parker was established...

Thanks for the suggestion, Jesse!
