Grandad actor John Witherspoon has revealed The Boondocks is returning for a fifth season.

In an interview on Joe Rogan's podcast, the Friday star was discussing how his on-screen performances matches his real life persona, stating, "I'm on the cartoon- what is it? The Boondocks? I didn't change my voice for The Boondocks. And they coming back; Boondocks is coming back... It's one of the best cartoons I've ever been on."

Based on Aaron McGruder's comic strip of the same name, The Boondocks first introduced viewers to Huey, Riley and Grandad in 2005. The comic follows the Freeman family, who have relocated to a predominantly white suburban neighborhood, as they deal with karate-wielding elderly people, conflicted rappers and trigger-happy millionaires along the way.

The Boondocks found critical and commercial success with its first three seasons, which explored hot button issues ranging from R. Kelly to the election of Barack Obama with sardonic bite. But Witherspoon's cavalier revelation comes as a shock, as the cartoon has been missing from the airwaves since ending a critically mixed fourth season in 2014. Despite Season 4's distinct lack of involvement from creator McGruder, this didn't stop the cartoonist from briefly reviving the comic strip in February of 2019 to offer his signature biting commentary on Donald Trump's presidency.

It's unclear at this time who from the cast will return for the fifth season, and McGruder is not confirmed as involved.
