Derek Kolstad, the creator and writer of the John Wick trilogy, has been tapped as the screenwriter of the big screen movie adaptation of Avalanche Studios and Square Enix's Just Cause video game franchise.

The Just Cause film rights were acquired by Constantin Film, which is working together with Prime Universe Films.

First launching in 2006, Just Cause is an open world action-adventure gaming franchise that follows an operative named Rico "Scorpion" Rodriguez, who works for the top-secret Agency to stop the evil mercenary organization known as The Black Hand. One of the game's highlights is Rodriguez's use of  his Grappling Hook and stealth Wing-suite. The fourth edition in the franchise, Just Cause 4, was released on Dec. 4, 2018.

Kolstad is coming off of the success of John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parebellum, with John Wick Chapter 4 officially confirmed with a May 21, 2021 release date.

Aquaman star Jason Momoa was reported to be starring in a Just Cause movie back in 2017, though there have been no updates on the film until today.

Just Cause will be produced by Kolstad, Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer and Prime Universe Film’s Adrian Askarieh, with Martin Moszkowicz of Constantin Film and Square Enix executive producing. Constantin Film is looking to land a star and director soon, in order to set a 2020 start date.
