Today, Warner Bros. officially pushed back the release of Sherlock Holmes 3 by a full year. The next installment of Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law's takeof the famous detective and John Watson was moved from Dec. 25, 2020 to Dec. 22, 2021.

Warner made the announcement Monday according to The Hollywood Reporter, further delaying a production that has been in development for years, and the sequel is now set to be released a decade after Downey's most recent outing as Sherlock.

Law and Downey will reunite in their key roles acting from a script by Chris Brancato (Narcos). The two are busy with their respective commitments to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. Downey also has The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle wrapping up production and an HBO reboot of Perry Mason in the works.

Guy Ritchie directed the first two Sherlock films but isn't expected to return to close out the trilogy. No replacement for him has been revealed yet.

Sherlock Holmes was released in 2009 and raked in $524 million at the global box office. Its 2011 sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, performed even better at the box office, making $545.4 million around the world.

Produced by Joel Silver, Susan Downey, and Lionel Wigram, Sherlock Holmes 3 will now open in theaters on December 22, 2021.
