Director Ruben Fleischer is reportedly not returning for Venom 2.

In January, Variety confirmed that a sequel to Venom was officially in the works, with screenwriter Kelly Marcel returning to pen the feature. At that time, the outlet suggested Fleischer might not return due to his commitments to Zombieland: Double TapDiscussing Film is now reporting that Fleischer will not return and that Sony Pictures is looking for a new director for the movie, which will reportedly start production in early November.

Although this isn't confirmation Fleischer won't return, there's a good chance it's accurate, especially if the production start date proves true. Should Venom 2 start production in November as reported, it's safe to presume Fleischer would still be tied up in post-production on the Zombieland sequel.

It remains to be seen who the studio will bring in to direct the film. However, an announcement shouldn't be too far off, as pre-production generally begins six months out.

Venom, which was directed by Ruben Fleischer, starred Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake aka Riot and Jenny Slate as Dr. Dora Skirth. The film, which was produced on a relatively modest budget compared to most superhero flicks, went on to earn an astounding $855.5 million at the global box office. Venom 2 currently does not have an official release date, although an October 2020 release seems likely.
