Actor Alexandra Shipp promises Storm will have new powers that more closely resemble those of her comic book counterpart in Simon Kinberg's upcoming Dark Phoenix.

Both Shipp and Halle Berry's portrayals of Storm have come under fire for their relative weakness compared to her ultra-powerful comic book incarnation. Thankfully, Shipp told fans at ACE Comic Con, as reported by Comic Book, that fans can expect more from her character in Dark Phoenix. "Lots of new powers, lots and lots of new powers," Shipp said. "It's pretty cool. Obviously not new to Storm, but new to us as an audience, visually. She really does mess some people up. It's pretty cool."

Shipp also promised that her Dark Phoenix Storm will be closer to Berry's portrayal, and she confirmed that she's ditched her Apocalypse mohawk to fit with Kinberg's '90s setting.

Although Storm is one of the most powerful mutants, Fox hasn't yet managed to make the most of her abilities in the X-Men movies. More than just creating the odd storm or making it rain, Storm's comic book powers include cosmic storms, solar wind, electromagnetic fields and the ability to control ocean currents.

After numerous reshoots and delays, Dark Phoenix will ditch its X-Men moniker as the long-awaited sequel to 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse. Shipp joined the mutant movie franchise in Apocalypse as one of the titular villain's Four Horseman, though she had switched sides by the time the credits rolled.

As it stands, Dark Phoenix looks like it could be one of the last X-Men movies under the Fox umbrella before the studio's acquisition by Disney. It's currently unclear what will happen to mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, meaning this could be Shipp's last outing as Storm.

Written and directed by X-franchise veteran Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film is scheduled to be released on June 7.
