Into the Spider-Verse also added about $9.4 million to its international haul.

The movie's box office success over the weekend was likely partially based on its big win at the Golden Globe Awards last Sunday. Into the Spider-Verse took home the Best Animated Motion Picture award, beating out Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet and Disney-Pixar's Incredibles II, as well as Isle of Dogs and Mirai.

Superheroes continue to set records at the box office. In addition, to Into the Spider-Verse's impressive milestone, Aquaman crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office this weekend.
