Ever game has to end, and now, we know when Game of Thrones will come to an end.

Today, HBO announced that the eighth and final season of the popular fantasy drama will begin on April 14, 2019. The show's final season will be six episodes long, which means that Game of Thrones' series finale should air on May 19, 2019.

The announcement was accompanied by a short teaser that showed Kit Harrington's Jon Snow, Sophie Turner's Sansa Stark and Maisie William's Arya Stark walking through the Crypt of Winterfell, confronting their own graves as the icy threat of the White Walkers approaches

While details on the upcoming season are still light, the show has already eclipsed its source material, George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. Despite the final season's short length, all of the episodes will reportedly be extra-long, and HBO head Richard Plepler has said that each episode is practically a feature-length movie.

In some earlier footage from the season that HBO has released,  Sansa Stark welcomed Emilia Clarke's Daenarys Targaryen to Winterfell and gave her control over her family's ancestral land while Jon Snow and Gwendoline Christie's Brienne of Tarth watch.

Several prequel series are reportedly in development. The first unnamed Game of Thrones prequel has already cast Naomi Watts, Josh Witehouse, Georgie Henley, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Toby Regbo, Sheila Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah and Alex Sharp. The series will reportedly take place thousands of years before Game of Thrones and chronic the secret history of Westeros and the origin of the White Walkers, among other things.

HBO made the announcement before tonight's season premiere of True Detective Season 3, where Mahershala Ali stars as a detective trying to solve the case that defined his professional career.

Game of Thrones will return for its eighth and final season on April 14, 2019. The HBO drama stars Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister, Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen,  Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, Maisie Williams as Arya Stark and Kit Harington as Jon Snow.
